From Special Ed to Writing Sentences

A little man in 2nd grade came in to school each day doing his best to write and read. He would put strings of letters under the pictures he drew in order to tell his story. Adults were perplexed and the strategies they used to help didn’t work. It was clear this child didn’t grasp the simplest concepts about reading and writing. Referring him for help was the next step.

In early November, after attending a 2 1/2 hour in-service, the teacher began using the Brain Friendly Reading program in her classroom. Along with her student teacher, the children began to tapping the chart, arm spelling words, writing words and reading words by playing Go Fish. Simple steps used daily yielded big results.

Within a month the little boy completely transformed as a a reader and speller. He went from writing nonsense to writing sentences. The teacher was amazed. Such dramatic results in a short period time were completely unexpected. In her 27 years of teaching, this teacher has never seen such results that literally changed the course of that child’s educational experience.
