Frustrated with not being able to help older children in her classroom learn to read, Kristin took her Orton-Gillingham Level 1 Certification with the Michigan Dyslexia Institute and began working with children in private practice. Kristin holds a Masters degree in Education and K-8 Teaching Certificate plus AMI Elementary and AMS Middle School certificates, plus years of classroom experience teaching children 5-15. That breadth of experience has allowed Kristin and Elaine to collaborate in evaluating reading practices, field-testing instructional strategies and poring over case studies. Kristin has codified their approach, developed a sequence of instructional strategies and created a training program to support teachers, parents as well as train future tutors.
Uncovering the simplest and most effective strategies for moving children up the ladder of reading is the cornerstone of Brain Friendly Reading. After spending years in classrooms (1st-8th) with no tools to help struggling readers, Kristin became an Orton-Gillingham trained Dyslexia Specialist. Firmly rooted in the Science of Reading, Kristin and Elaine have carefully curated the BFR program. As the Lead Trainer and Curriculum Designer, Kristin work with teachers, parents, and tutors, equipping them with both the theory and practical skills necessary to be successful. While her primary role is as the Executive Director of BFR, she does see tutoring clients in Farmington Hills, MI and on-line. Working with children inspires Kristin to keep advocating for evidence-based reading instruction in our schools and provides important interactions where insight and innovation happen.
Elaine spent a lifetime experimenting with instructional strategies to identify those that achieved results with the greatest amount of enjoyment and cooperation on the part of the child. Extensive training plus 17 years of experience as a kindergarten Montessori teacher laid the groundwork for her deep understanding of how children learn to read. As a public school Reading and Dyslexia Specialist in Texas, Elaine honed her craft by identifying key instructional strategies that moved children to full fluency. Later, Elaine began innovating strategies that when applied regularly brought about significant results with her tutoring clients.
She mastered the art of teaching reading to young children of varying abilities first as a Head Teacher in a Montessori classroom. As a TX State Certified teacher and public school administrator, she coached and mentored teachers. After receiving nationally recognized dyslexia training through Neuhaus, she came back to her first love, working with struggling readers as a Reading Specialist in an elementary school with over 1,000 children. Moving children up to grade level fluency as quickly as possible was the goal. It meant She had to innovate new ways of teaching groups of children while getting unmatched results. When she moved to Michigan, Elaine began tutoring. She and Kristin collaborated to create the Brain Friendly Reading program.
