How it works

Brain Based Learning

We can train the brain to learn to read. Humans aren’t wired for reading and spelling but it doesn’t mean they can’t learn if they are given tools that are brain friendly. Fun, multi-sensory and systematic are keys to our success.
Nonprofit Partner - Reading for ALL!
Kristin Dwyer is the co-author of the BFR program.
She founded We Shall Read, a 501c3 non-profit organization to reduce financial barriers for those who want to take the BFR training and receive mentoring and long-term support for helping children, teens and adults move up the ladder of reading.

Yes, people of all ages see noticeable results. Children have a renewed sense of hope after struggling for years. Teachers enjoy using the program because their students make unprecedented gains.

BFR is rooted in Montessori, Orton-Gillingham and current brain research. The authors spent years field testing evidence-based instructional strategies crafting a straightforward approach for adults to learn to use that follows the science.

No. Adults learn to use the Basic Daily Lesson Sequence and instructional strategies through asynchronous or in-person training. Many find they learn right alongside the children they are teaching, learning and growing together. And, chart tapping is the first skill, and it’s a game changer!

Learning to read in a second language is straightforward with BFR. The BFR Vocabulary and Comprehension materials benefit children and teens of all ages without being babyish. Building decoding and encoding skills alongside vocabulary is key.

The BFR authors have extensive experience working with children who have both diagnosed and undiagnosed learning differences, such as dyslexia. They designed BFR to meet the specific needs of this group, confident that the learning would extend to all learners.

YES! Game play is central to the work. Simple, low/no-cost games build the neural pathways in children’s brains. The fun of game play reduces stress and anxiety, resulting in maximum learning potential. Multi-sensory materials are one key to BFR’s success.
