BFR Level 1 Training

Strategies for teaching children to unlock their reading superpowers utilizing our unique approach based on the brain research and the latest science of reading.  Trainers are Orton-Gillingham trained with decades of experience.

Brain Friendly Reading program

  • · A unique program rooted in the latest reading science based on current brain research  
  • · Highly-effective strategies that are engaging for the students create a low stress learning environment that builds confidence by building skills
  • · A structured-literacy approach which means the work is explicit, systematic and cumulative - each skill builds upon what has come before 
  • · Multi-sensory methods utilized go beyond shaving cream and salt trays and follow the research on how the brain learns to read in a way that is practical for use in whole group instruction
  • · Game playing is essential for over learning, reinforcement and repetition that brings whole classrooms up the ladder of reading 
  • · Spelling and reading are taught as integrated parts simultaneously as each informs the other  

What will you learn?

  • · Phonemic Awareness - How to help children hear and manipulate sounds
  • · Alphabetic Principle – Daily multi-sensory review builds this quickly and efficiently
  • · Phonics - reading by blending sounds together
  • · Spelling foundations by learning how to break words apart into their individual sounds
  • · Explicit instruction for specific spelling rules in order to help children unlock the code and see the patterns in words 
  • · Syllable types - the six types are integrated seamlessly into the program
  • · Dividing words into syllables following certain rules makes reading and spelling much easier
  • · Vocabulary building is integrated throughout the program and layered into the other work 
  • · Puzzle word (sight word) games and strategies for quick recall and recognition 
  • · Reading fluency and syntax using carefully crafted phrases and sentences that are fully decodable 
  • · Comprehension work with sentences. Developing the connection that words have meaning and together the reader can make a picture in the mind. 

Training Companion Guide Comes with 80+ Lessons and over 180 GAMES and Activities

  • The Training Companion Guide provides an overview of the program and an instructional sequence for whole group, small group and individual intervention.   The Guide also contains all of the lessons along with two corresponding games for each.  
  • During the training each teacher crafts her own resource manual with notes, charts, research documents, diagrams, etc.  
  • The lessons in the Guide follows a particular order from simplest to more complex concepts.   Each lesson contains teacher instructions, word lists, phonetic phrases and sentences , practice activities, reminders for spelling rules and more.  
  • Each lesson is accompanied by two games (often at two different instructional levels) that contain a variety of multi-sensory engaging activities that accompany each individual lesson.  
  • In addition to the Training Companion Guide, individual Lessons Book and Games Book are available for purchase and are intended to be consumables.  
  • The training brings the work to life as participants practice all the fundamental skills and role-play with their peers in breakout rooms on Zoom.  
  • Hands-on, interactive, experiential learning with an emphasis of study and practice between training sessions is essential.
  • Learning strategies for tutoring on-line will be incorporated throughout the course. 

After Successfully Completing The Course Expect:

  • On-going support through Facebook Live sessions and Zoom group coaching calls.
  • Mentoring and support from skilled tutors in the Brain Friendly network
  • Access to videos through the BFR YouTube Channel for on-going PD and also to refer clients/parents to for additional instruction
  • Access to more printable templates for games through Google Docs
  • Connection to families of children who need services through this website.  You photo and bio are listed and BFR will periodically promote our tutors at no cost to you.
  • Certification as a Brain Friendly Reading Level I Tutor
